Vardenafil is sold under the trade name Levitra, which is an oral prescription for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Unlike sildenafil, this is a selective and effective treatment for challenging cases. Erectile dysfunction is when you cannot get or maintain a firm enough erection to have sexual intercourse.

Working
Vardenafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE-5) inhibitor. It acts to block PDE-5, that normally terminates an erection from taking place. By the blocking of PDE-5, Vardenafil enables a man to become erect. This is achieved in a situation where certain muscles of the penis relax and allow blood to flow into the penis.

An even simpler worded version of this is that Vardenafil relaxes your blood vessels in your penis, to enable blood to rush into the penis once you are sexually aroused. For this medication to induce an erection, you must be sexually stimulated. Therefore, it is taken as needed.

Dosage
The usual initiating dose is 10 mg taken orally about 1 hour before sexual activity. Vardenafil comes in a tablet and an ODT formulation.
